Utopia ...Women's Rights, Suffrage and Equal Rights

The Oneida Community Mansion House, home of the utopian Oneida Community (1848-1880), tells the story of one of America's most radical and successful experimental communities and the joint stock company that emerged after its breakup. The Community's experiments in social reform included advocating for equality between men and women in all aspects of life and work.

Women's Rights, Suffrage and Equal Rights:
The Mansion House uses the former home of the utopian Oneida Community (1848-1880) to tell the story of the Community and its experiments in social reform. A place where men and woman worked and learned side by side, all property and life was shared communally. The Community was founded, in part, on the belief that owning personal property was sinful, including the enslavement of peoples. They viewed traditional marriage as the subjugation of women through repeated pregnancies, childbirth and societal inequality. The Community's social practices challenged contemporary ideas of family and gender roles in ways that are still relevant today. Their progressive philosophy is evident in the Mansion House itself, a design that reflects the values and social organization of the Community.

A National Historic Landmark building, the museum preserves and interprets the heritage of the Oneida Community in the 93,000 square ft. Mansion House with programs, tours, facility rentals, overnight lodging, 33 acres of landscaped lawns, gardens, trails and a historic golf course.
