This is Chimney Bluffs State Park—one of the most unusual landscapes in New York State.
The formations may look solid and permanent, but they are neither. Wind, rain, snow, frost, gravity, waves, and changing lake conditions continue to reshape the bluffs. A tower visible today may look different after another winter storm. A narrow ridge may gradually disappear, while erosion exposes new shapes nearby.
Chimney Bluffs is not simply a scenic destination. It is a place where visitors can watch geology still happening.
What Makes Chimney Bluffs So Special?
Many of New York’s most dramatic landscapes are formed from exposed bedrock. Chimney Bluffs is different.
The pinnacles are made primarily from glacial sediment—an unsorted mixture of clay, silt, sand, gravel, cobbles, and occasional larger stones left behind by moving ice.
Because these materials erode at different rates, the shoreline has developed an extraordinary collection of narrow spires, steep-sided ridges, gullies, and freestanding towers. Some formations resemble chimneys. Others look like castles, cathedral walls, giant teeth, or ruins from another world.
The appearance changes with the light. Dry sediment may look pale gray, tan, or brown. After rain, the same surfaces become darker and more strongly textured. Morning and evening shadows reveal narrow channels and shapes that can be difficult to see under bright midday sun.
The result is a landscape unlike almost anything else along Lake Ontario.
A Landscape Built by Ice
The story of Chimney Bluffs begins during the Ice Age, when massive glaciers repeatedly moved across what is now New York State.
These glaciers carried tremendous quantities of rock and sediment. As the ice moved, it crushed, mixed, transported, and redeposited material gathered from across the landscape.
Beneath the glacier, sediment was molded into long, rounded hills known as drumlins. Drumlins commonly have a broad, rounded end and a longer, tapered shape that reflects the direction in which the ice moved.
Thousands of drumlins remain across western and central New York. They are especially noticeable in the Finger Lakes and Lake Ontario regions, where they appear as long, parallel hills across fields and forests.
At Chimney Bluffs, several drumlins reached the Lake Ontario shoreline. The lake began cutting into their northern ends, exposing the loose glacial material inside.
What began as rounded hills gradually became steep cliffs. Continued erosion then carved those cliffs into the dramatic pinnacles seen today.
What Is Glacial Till?
The material forming much of the bluffs is commonly called glacial till.
Till is not neatly sorted into separate layers of sand, clay, or gravel. Instead, it can contain particles of many different sizes mixed together. Fine clay may surround pebbles, rounded cobbles, and larger stones carried by glacial ice.
Look carefully at an exposed section of the bluff and you may notice individual rocks embedded in the finer material. Some of those stones were transported from locations far from the park before being released as the glacier melted.
This mixture helps explain the unusual texture of the bluffs. Water may wash fine sediment away while larger stones remain temporarily exposed. Harder or more compact areas sometimes protect softer material below them, allowing narrow towers or ridges to survive longer than the sediment around them.
Eventually, however, gravity and erosion overcome even the most dramatic formations.
Why Do the Bluffs Look Like Castles?
The castle-like shapes are produced by a process called differential erosion.
Not every part of a drumlin erodes at exactly the same speed. Variations in moisture, slope, sediment composition, plant roots, drainage, exposure to waves, and freeze-and-thaw cycles cause some sections to wear away faster than others.
Rainwater flows down the face of the bluff, following small depressions. Over time, those depressions deepen into channels and gullies.
As neighboring channels grow, the sediment left between them becomes a narrow ridge. Continued erosion cuts the ridge into smaller fins, pinnacles, and towers.
A stone or more resistant patch of sediment may temporarily shelter material directly beneath it, creating a small cap or projecting form. Trees and roots may also slow erosion in one location while adding weight and instability in another.
The formations therefore appear almost architectural, even though they were created entirely by natural forces.
Lake Ontario Is Still Sculpting the Shore
The glacier supplied the material, but Lake Ontario continues the work.
Waves strike the base of the bluffs and remove fallen sediment. Storms can produce especially strong wave action, undercutting slopes and carrying clay, sand, gravel, and stone away from the shoreline.
When material is removed from the bottom of a bluff, the upper portion becomes less stable. Sections may slump, slide, or collapse. The exposed surface is then attacked by rain, snow, ice, runoff, and wind.
Lake currents also move loose sediment along the coast. This process helps form and maintain beaches, offshore bars, and barrier features elsewhere along the southern Lake Ontario shoreline.
In that sense, sediment leaving Chimney Bluffs does not simply disappear. It becomes part of a much larger coastal system.
A Landscape That Is Never Finished
One of the most fascinating things about Chimney Bluffs is that no view is permanent.
Photographs taken years apart may show pinnacles that have narrowed, shifted, collapsed, or disappeared. Newly exposed surfaces can create formations that were not previously visible.
Changes may occur gradually through ordinary weathering or suddenly during a storm, spring thaw, heavy rainfall, or slope collapse.
This makes Chimney Bluffs beautiful, scientifically important, and potentially dangerous.
The temptation to climb onto a narrow ridge or approach the edge for a better photograph should always be resisted. Ground that appears stable may contain cracks, overhangs, saturated sediment, or unsupported material hidden beneath vegetation.
The safest and most respectful way to experience the bluffs is from established trails and designated viewing areas.
Seeing the Bluffs from Above
Views from the upper trail system reveal the scale of the shoreline and the relationship between the bluffs and Lake Ontario.
From above, visitors can see narrow ridges extending toward the water, deep channels cut into the sediment, and pinnacles standing apart from the main slope.
The elevated perspective also reveals how close the formations are to surrounding woodland. Trees grow near the edge, and exposed roots sometimes show where the bluff has gradually retreated.
Because the edge is actively eroding, visitors should remain on marked trails, obey barriers and posted closures, and avoid stepping onto exposed formations.
Seeing the Bluffs from the Lakeshore
When conditions and official access allow, the lakeshore offers a very different perspective.
From below, the pinnacles appear much taller. Their vertical channels, embedded stones, changing colors, and fragile textures become easier to appreciate.
The shoreline may include cobbles, driftwood, wet clay, loose sediment, and uneven footing. Waves, lake levels, storm damage, ice, erosion, and fallen material can affect access.
Visitors should never assume that a route below the bluffs is safe simply because others have walked there. Conditions can change rapidly, and falling sediment or rocks are possible near any active bluff.
Check current park notices before attempting shoreline access, remain well away from the base of unstable formations, and never climb the bluffs.

Chimney Bluffs rewards careful observation. Rather than looking only for the largest formation, slow down and examine how the entire landscape works.

There are no official names for most of these shapes. Their temporary nature is part of what makes discovering them so enjoyable.
Lake Ontario: More Than a Background
Lake Ontario is an essential part of the Chimney Bluffs story.
It is one of the five Great Lakes and forms a vast horizon beyond the park. On a calm day, the water may appear peaceful and almost motionless. During a storm, the same lake can produce powerful waves and dramatic weather.
The lake influences erosion, temperature, clouds, wind, fog, snow, plants, wildlife, and the overall character of the shoreline.
Its color also changes constantly. Depending on the sky, depth, sediment, sunlight, and weather, the water may appear deep blue, turquoise, gray, silver, green, or nearly black.
At Chimney Bluffs, the lake is not simply beside the landscape. It is one of the forces actively creating it.
Birdwatching Along the Lake Ontario Coast
Chimney Bluffs is included in the New York State Birding Trail and provides habitat for both resident and migratory birds.
The combination of open water, shoreline, wooded trails, nearby wetlands, and agricultural land creates opportunities to observe a wide variety of species.

Summer brings green woodland, warm lake breezes, wildflowers, insects, birds, and longer daylight hours.

Fall
Autumn adds red, orange, yellow, and gold foliage above the muted earth tones of the bluffs.

Winter can transform Chimney Bluffs into a stark landscape of snow, exposed trees, frozen ground, ice, and gray-blue water.
Snow highlights the shape of the ridges, while bare trees reveal views hidden during summer. Freeze-and-thaw cycles continue to weaken and reshape the formations.
Trails may be icy, snow-covered, or temporarily unsafe. Visitors should use proper footwear and respect all winter closures and warnings.

Erosion can force trail closures or rerouting. A path shown on an older map, website, or personal hiking app may no longer reflect current conditions.

Visitors do not need to complete every trail to appreciate Chimney Bluffs. Even a shorter walk can reveal woodland habitat, glacial landforms, lake views, and the dramatic pinnacles.

The formations themselves are too fragile to support climbing. Even where the surface feels firm, the material beneath may be cracked, wet, hollowed, or poorly supported.
