She is the first Native American/First Nations woman to be venerated in the Roman Catholic Church. Tekakwitha was beatified by Blessed Pope John Paul II in 1980. An Algonquin-Mohawk woman born in present-day New York state who became known as a Catholic religious lay woman. After surviving smallpox as a child, which killed her immediate family, at age 20 she was baptized as a Roman Catholic and settled for the last years of her life at the Jesuit mission village of Kahnawake, south of Montreal in New France. �1666-1676 Shrine ...Site ...Search ...Map
