The Allan Herschell Company, the most prolific maker of carousels, specialized in producing portable machines which could be used by traveling carnival operators.The Factory Company produced over 3,000 hand carved wooden carousels and out-produced all of its rivals in the carousel industry. Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum - is housed in the historic Allan Herschell Company factory building located at 180 Thompson Street in North Tonawanda. The building is listed on the New York State & National Registers of Historic Places. The Herschell Companies produced more hand carved carrousels than the combined total of companies in New York City, Philadelphia and Abilene, KS. They also were the world’s largest producers of other amusement rides, significantly impacting the history of family recreation in the United States. The museum exhibits interpret this historic building and its products. They include the Carving, Music Roll and Paint Shops with 24 hand-carved carrousel figures. The new exhibit for 2011 is “Kiddieland - A Business With A Future”. Two operating carrousels bring back childhood memories or create new family memories. The mission of the North Tonawanda History Museum is to assemble, preserve, protect, and exhibit collections pertaining to the history of North Tonawanda, its people and community life, focusing especially on our rich immigrant heritage and role as an important shipping and manufacturing center strategically located on the historic Erie Canal and Niagara River in the 19th and 20th centuries.
